"Cajun Music: The Essential Collection" (11/12/2002) Cajun Various Artists, Rounder SelectIncludes liner notes by Scott Billington. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This is part of Rounder Records "The Essential Collection" series. An installment of Rounder's 30th anniversary celebration, this album showcases the best of Cajun music available on the label since the beginning. This album, like its zydeco counterpart, attempts to cover all of the major aspects of Cajun music over the course of the track listings. Here, the time line stretches from the very beginnings of Cajun with a cover of Am?d? Ardoin's old work by Geno Delafose & French Rockin Boogie, up to the present day in the Bluerunners' rock-informed sound, with all points in between touched upon. The fusion of Coteau provides a nice halfway point, with a deep influence of country thrown in, and the next group featuring Michael Doucet, Beausoleil, is also featured with an even higher step of fusion, with electric guitars working their way in. Where necessary, the accordions play a stunning bit of work, and the fiddles stay in the rhythmic accompaniment section. Where necessary again, the vocals take a strong stance in front of the instrument lines. All of the greats of contemporary Cajun music are represented with a song or two, and all of the styles that have come and gone over the history of Cajun are represented by an artist or two. As far as introductions to the genre are concerned, this album is certainly a worthwhile pick. For someone already acquainted with Cajun music, the album may perhaps be better passed up in favor of single-artist albums by the artists on the compilation for further breadth. ~ Adam Greenberg

"Git It, Beau Jocque!" (03/21/1995) Cajun Jocque, Beau, Rounder SelectBeau Jocque & The Zydeco Hi-Rollers: Beau Jocque (vocals, accordion), Ray Johnson (guitar, background vocals), Joseph "Cookie" Chavis (guitar), Chuck Bush (bass, background vocals), Steve "Skeeta" Charlot (drums, background vocals), Wilfred "Caveman" Pierre (rubboard). Recorded live at Harry's Lounge, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana and Slim's Y-Ki-Ki Lounge, Opelousas, Louisiana on September 23-24, 1994. Includes liner notes by Ben Sandmel. Git It, Beau Jocque! is the first major live release from the new era zydeco legend, released at the peak of his career in 1995. The joint is thoroughly jumpin' as the Zydeco Hi-Rollers plunge from dance to dance. The songs are largely originals, with a few exceptions sprinkled here and there. The band opens with Boozoo Chavis' "Motor Dude Special," then goes into the title track and the lengthy "Beau Jocque Boogie." "Sack O' Woe" is a little more blues-based, and the "Beau Jocque Run" picks up the tempo quite a bit. Reminding the listener that it's a live album, the band turns the recitation of the night's winning raffle ticket number into a short-lived zydeco tour-de-force in "0394413," and, after the only piece sung fully in French, moves into an old Lightnin' Hopkins number. A two-step later, Beau's singing "Happy Birthday" in his own way, followed by another reminder of the live status as he harangues someone whose car is blocking the club driveway. A Neville Brothers piece brings in a bit of the exotic soul, and the album closes with "Give Him Cornbread," which soon became a decent-sized hit for Jocque. Every Beau Jocque album has some fire in it, and this one's no exception. Pick Up on This might be the first recommendation to new listeners, but this one's excellent, too, and has a couple of interesting little rarities for hardcore fans and collectors. ~ Adam Greenberg

"Swamp Music, Vol. 7: Legends of Zydeco - The Old School Strikes Back" (01/23/1995) Cajun Various Artists, IndigoFeaturing only two artists, Boozoo Chavis and John Delafose, playing their brand of zydeco in the modern era, this set highlights how the evolution of zydeco freed up each man to dig deeper into the blues traditions it saturated itself in to move out from the Cajun folk traditions. As an example, Chavis' "Boozoo That's Who" is a straight-up Chicago roll in the zydeco hay, with guitars knotting up the mix with fills and runs between the accordions' choruses. He follows it with the wonderfully filthy "Deacon Jones," whose tune is stolen right from Chuck Berry's fake book. It's the kind of dirty song young rappers of the 21st century would never in a million years have the sense of poetry to write. Because for Chavis, it's not boasting about himself or his own prowess, it's a story that's sexy and wild. By the time the third track rolls around, we get the picture. On "Blues All Around My Bed," with the washboard scraping out a syncopated rhythm, Chavis sings those blues straight out, like Big Joe Turner shouting every ounce of emotion from them. As for Delafose, it's a different kind of story: he digs into the soul and R&B end of the blues. Here, we get the sound of Memphis in his raw, heartbreaking songs, wringing teardrops from the accordion itself. Give a listen to "Loan Me Your Handkerchief" and feel that washboard rhythmically setting you up for that moaning accordion and Delafose's lonesome vocal. Likewise, his version of Clifton Chenier's "Morning Train" could have come from Willie Dixon just as well -- though I can't imagine Dixon using an accordion instead of a guitar or harmonica instead. Finally, Delafose's own, "Blues at Midnight," carries the soul of early doo wop and rock & roll into the blues and turns them all into a pure zydeco wonder. The blues singing is pure, but the accordion lines and the washboard shuffle it into contemporary New Orleans zydeco style, carrying with it a swaying, shimmying dance flavor that is impossible to resist. For those interested in the blues and R&B side of zydeco, this is your pick out of this series. ~ Thom Jurek

"Live! At the Habibi Temple" (08/02/1994) Cajun Chavis, Boozoo, Rounder SelectRecorded live at the Habibi Temple, Lake Charles, Louisiana. Boozoo Chavis is one of the reigning kings of zydeco. His 1954 song "Paper in My Shoe" helped define the genre. 40 years later, and after several decades spent away from the music business, Chavis released this live set, which finds him at the top of his game. The album was recorded in Lake Charles, Louisiana at the Habibi Temple, a massive structure used for auto shows and Shriner events that has a 5,000-square-foot stage. Boozoo is relentless, as he sings and plays his accordion. He's matched every step of the way by his band, the Magic Sounds (two of his sons are in the five-piece ensemble). Though a tune like "Boozoo's Breakdown" is built on very simple components, it springs to life as an incredible rhythmic machine. The players are all linked as one steamrolling entity. They even revisit his old hit, playing it with a brightness that belies its age. LIVE AT THE HABIBI TEMPLE is the next best thing to being there.

Photographers: Kent Hutslar; Phil Gould . While Zydeco crossed over to the mainstream in a big way in the '80s courtesy of artists like Buckwheat Zydeco, Little Sidney, and Queen Ida, it was in the '90s that the style truly began to assimilate more modern elements like funk, rock, and R&B. This compilation on Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural's own label documents the very contemporary place at which zydeco music has arrived in the 21st century. While the first couple of cuts from Buckwheat are in a fairly traditional mode, offerings from young zydeco cats Sean Ardoin (descendant of the legendary Amede Ardoin) and Lil' Brian are based more on modern funk and R&B grooves, using the conventional zydeco trappings as just one more ingredient to throw into the pot. Not to be outdone, Buckwheat closes the disc out with an incendiary, epic-length version of "Hey Joe," and one can't help thinking that Jimi Hendrix would have whole-heartedly approved.

"Legendary Bayou Boogie" (n/a) Cajun Broussard, Van, Gonzales MusicSouthern Louisiana's Van Broussard is the king of swamp pop, a genre as difficult to define as the wind. While swamp pop seems to be a form of R&B with a trademark slowed down/hurry up rhythm and a hazy 1950s rock & roll feel, it is probably easiest to say what swamp pop isn't: it isn't Cajun or zydeco, but it issues forth from the same bayous, and it works toward the same end of getting people to dance. When all is said and done, swamp pop is whatever its artists say it is, and in Broussard's case, that would include Jimmy Reed's " "Baby What You Want Me to Do," Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," and Larry Williams' "Bony Maronie," versions of which appear on this remarkably cohesive collection drawn from recordings Broussard did with the Bayou Boogie label in the late 1970s. Also included here is Broussard's (and swamp pop's) signature song, "Mathilda." ~ Steve Leggett

"Hang It High, Hang It Low *" (03/07/2006) Cajun Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, Rounder SelectNathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas: Nathan Williams (vocals, accordion, piano); Dennis Paul Williams (guitar); Nathan Williams Jr. (keyboards); Robert Leblanc (bass instrument); Herman Brown (drums); Mark Williams (rub-board). Despite the devastation caused to his native New Orleans by 2005's hurricane Katrina, award-winning accordionist Nathan Williams' musical message of good times remains undiminished. On this collection of mostly self-penned, uptempo zydeco, Williams' big-hearted voice, virtuoso accordion playing and expansive exhortations to "Think About the Good Times" are both an antidote to life's smackdowns and a reason to get down and boogie. He turns Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (The Happy Song)" into something like a ska outing, while the title track is a crowd-pleasing romp, and songs like "Don't Worry 'Bout the Mule" and "Your Love Last as Long as Your Money" are candid slices of homespun wisdom as well as great dance material.
