"Start Singing With Barney" (11/11/2003) Children's Barney (Children), Koch Records (USA)Principal cast: Dean Wendt (Barney); Julie Johnson (Baby Bop); Patty Wirtz (BJ). Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ return with Start Singing With Barney, a 23-track collection of lively singalong material. There's plenty of silly fun to be had here -- in Barney's world, phrases like "Diddle-daddle doo," "On your tummy now," and "Hi, little ducks! Waddle, waddle, waddle! So cute!" take on new resonance. Everything's a good time, from reading ("I Love to Read!/Books Are Fun!") to pitching in ("Clean Up"). But Barney isn't all about making mundane things magical. He and his dino-riffic pals also like to dance for their inspiration. "Bumpin' Up and Down," "Gaggle, Giggle, Wiggle Dance/The Dino Dance," and a country-flavored take on "Old MacDonald" all bop along at a kid-friendly pace perfect for following along at home. To that end, Start Singing With Barney includes a full lyric sheet in its liner notes. Album standouts include "The Popcorn Song," "The Clapping Song," and that perennial favorite and set-closer, "I Love You." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Disney: The Best of Silly Songs" (01/27/2004) Children's Various Artists, Walt DisneyDespite its Disney imprint, Disney: The Best of Silly Songs isn't an especially distinctive set of singalong songs. The Disney characters do show up on some of the tracks: Goofy leads a singalong of "A Penny," Mickey Mouse and Goofy do a quick comedy routine on "Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay!," Goofy returns on "Baby Bumble Bee," and Donald Duck, along with Huey, Louie, and Dewey, sing "Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends," appropriately enough. Most of the album, however, consists of unremarkable and somewhat shrill versions of songs like "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream." Disney: The Best of Silly Songs definitely offers quite a bit in quantity, with 30 songs in total. It's too bad that quality wasn't the main aim, though -- fewer and funnier songs would have made the album come closer to living up to its title. Still, there are worse children's silly-song collections out there, so Disney: The Best of Silly Songs may still have some worth for families looking for some funny songs. ~ Heather Phares

"Toddler's Next Steps: ABC & 1-2-3 Songs" (04/13/2007) Children's Toddler's Next Steps, St. ClairPersonnel includes: Fred Penner, Jack Grunsky, Sharon, Lois & Bram, Bob McGrath, Al Simmons. Come on, who can't love a song about monkeys? This volume of the Toddler's Next Steps series -- subtitled "ABC & 1-2-3 Songs" -- kicks off with the fun singalong "Five Little Monkeys." It continues through the alliterative hot jazz of "I Always Punctuate My P's" ("Procure a pack of chimpanzees!"), the pleasant, almost James Taylor-ish "Stories Live," and the spastic-'50s rock redux "Rock and Roll Teachers." In addition to the kid's choir that pops up throughout Toddler's Next Steps, it features performances from series regulars like Bob McGrath, Jack Grunsky, and the always reliable Sharon, Lois & Bram. Highly recommended. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Here Comes the Big Red Car" (01/10/2006) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)Personnel: Emma Buter, Gregory Page , Paul Paddick (vocals); John Field , Anthony Field, Terry Murray (guitar); Greg Truman, Gerry Brady, Sam Moran, Ryan DeSaulnier (manzello); Jeff Fatt (keyboards); Andrew Bignall, Tony Henry (drums). Audio Mixers: Phil Judd ; Anthony McKenzie; Robin Gist; Chris Brooks. Audio Remasterer: Don Bartley. Recording information: Struggle Street Studios, Bellevue Hill, Sydney, New Sou; Tracking Station Studios. Unknown Contributor Roles: Alex Keller; Sarah McCloskey; Leeanne Ashley; Tony Rioseco; Kate Tibbertsma; Kim Clelland; Sharyn Garrad; Mike Conway; Paul Field. Arranger: Dominic Lindsay. Those with children of a certain age are probably already familiar with the Wiggles, an Australian quartet who are basically the Beatles for the preschool set. The comparison is not quite as outlandish as that sounds, because on Here Comes the Big Red Car, as on their earlier albums, the songs have a maturity of composition and arrangement that's far beyond what most other artists in their genre are doing. This is a slightly roundabout way of saying that although the Wiggles' lyrics will never be mistaken for Elvis Costello's (the title track is extremely insistent on the importance of wearing one's seat belt), the poppy, catchy tunes are melodically sturdy and interestingly arranged. In other words, when the kids want to play this album five times in one afternoon, it'll be considerably less annoying than the average children's music album of weedy acoustic guitar or characterless, rinky-dink synths. ~ Stewart Mason

"Disney's Karaoke Series: Disney Princess" (09/30/2003) Children's Disney's Karaoke Series, Walt DisneyPersonnel: Amy Baker Stinson, Meredith Robertson, Robin Huston, Leslie French (vocals). The Disney Princess volume in Disney's Karaoke Series includes vocal and instrumental versions of eight songs from several Disney movies, such as The Little Mermaid ("Part of Your World"), Beauty and the Beast ("Beauty and the Beast"), Pocahontas ("Colors of the Wind"), Mulan ("Reflection"), and Lady & the Tramp ("He's a Tramp"). The tracks with vocals are complete vocal versions, rather than versions featuring guiding, low-level background voices. If you have a CD+G player, you'll see the lyrics for each song displayed on its screen. Unlike a lot of karaoke discs, this can be enjoyed on its own. ~ Andy Kellman
