"Discovery" (03/13/2001) Electronic Daft Punk, Virgin Records (USA)Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo. Additional personnel includes: Todd Edwards, Romananthony. "Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Daft Punk (vocals); Romanthony, Todd Edwards (vocals). Illustrator: Daft Punk. Photographers: Mitchell Feinberg; Luis Sanchis. In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album, HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic thread runs throughout DISCOVERY. "Digital Love" sounds like the theme to a '70s sitcom as realized by the Buggles. "Nightvision" is a mellow, wordless, Quiet Storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, "Superheroes" marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat. Ultimately, DISCOVERY is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.

"Simple Things" (09/01/2004) Electronic Zero 7, PalmZero 7: Henry Binns, Sam Hardaker. Additional personnel includes: Mozez, Sophie Barker, Sia Furler, Philani Mothers (vocals); Phil Thornally (guitar, bass); Dedi Madden, Allan Simpson (guitar); Sally Herbert (violin); The Brilliant Strings (strings); Simon Elms (trumpet); Max Beesley (Fender Rhodes piano); Pete Trotman (bass); Jeremy Stacey (drums); Jenny Arrel (percussion). Personnel: Sophie Barker (vocals); Phil Thornalley, Alan Simpson (guitar); Jeremy Stacey (violin, drums); Sally Herbert (violin); Brilliant Strings (strings); David Litman (flute); Simon Elms, Graeme Stewart (trumpet); Maxton G. Beesley, Jr. (Fender Rhodes piano); Miggy Barradas (drums); Jenny Arrel, Oli Savill (percussion). Audio Mixer: Demus. Audio Remixer: Zero 7. Recording information: Shabang Studios. After a number of singles and EPs, British electronica duo Zero 7 made their full-length debut with 2001's SIMPLE THINGS, an inspired fusion of loungey electronica a la the French duo Air and the more assertive trip-hop of Massive Attack and Tricky. At its heart, SIMPLE THINGS has all the same elements that many similar records have had ever since the early days of Soul II Soul: subtle and inventive sampling, R&B diva vocals, Kraftwerk-like synthesizer chills, and tasteful beats and bass lines to tie the whole thing together. The difference is that Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns, the core of Zero 7, keep those ingredients in precisely the correct proportions. The American edition of SIMPLE THINGS adds two songs, "Salt Water Sound" and "Spinning."

"Bali Dua *" (04/03/2001) Electronic Jalan Jalan, Pacific Moon RecordsAudio Mixer: Yasufumi Yamashita. Jalan Jalan is an experimental New Age/world fusion outfit from Japan. Listeners familiar with the group's beautiful debut BALI will find much to appreciate on BALI DUA, which arguably improves on its predecessor. Like BALI, BALI DUA uses Indonesian gamelan music as its foundation, sampling the traditional instruments (along with various chimes and gongs) to evoke breezy, paradisiacal visions of Bali. Behind, in, and around these samples, however, Jalan Jalan employ keys and electronic textures to generate wide, symphonic swaths of atmosphere that push the gamelan elements into the stratosphere. The resulting mix is intoxicating, bringing together ambient, electronica, world music, and minimal composition for an overall effect that is perfectly suited to meditation, relaxation, yogic practices, and headphone immersion.

"Details" (08/13/2002) Electronic Frou Frou, MCA Records (USA)Frou Frou: Imogen Heap (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, drums, programming); Guy Sigsworth (gutiar, piano, synthesizer, drums, programming). Additional personnel includes: Iona Petcu-Colan (violin); Dair Malloy (glass harmonica, handbells, waterphone); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Elad Elharar (bass); Mich Gerber (bowed double bass); Makoto Sakamoto (drums). Personnel: Imogen Heap (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, drums, sampler); Guy Sigsworth (guitar, piano, synthesizer, drums, sampler); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Makoto Sakamoto (drums). Audio Mixers: Damian Taylor; Guy Sigsworth; Tom Elmhurst; Imogen Heap. Recording information: At Home; Flat Studio, Bern, Switzerland; FrouFrou Central, London, England; Ganalahari Studios, Bangalore, India; Rak Studios, London, England. Arrangers: Guy Sigsworth; Imogen Heap. What do you get when you combine a producer/electronics whiz who's worked with Madonna, Bjork, and Seal, and a distinctive, charming female singer? Judging from the results of Frou Frou's debut album details, you get a duo capable of combining complex, arresting sonic vistas with very organic, intimate vocals to fine effect. From the dreamy, hypnotic quality of the opening track "Let Go" to the airy, Beth Orton-like "Hear Me Out," Guy Sigsworth consistently manages to find just the right setting for Imogen Heap's up-close vocal style. Whether Sigsworth is employing delicate ambient textures, gentle trip-hop beats, or near-techno dance arrangements, he's perfectly in tune with both the mood of the song and the breathy-but-confident delivery of Heap. There's an audible air of artistic simpatico between the two that runs throughout DETAILS and makes the whole thing work.

"Dial "M" for Monkey" (06/03/2003) Electronic Bonobo, Ninja Tune (USA)Bonobo: Simon Green (various instruments). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Andy Ross (flute); Ben Cook (saxophone). Photographer: Dominic Howard. Simon Green's Bonobo project may not have the respect of discriminating, forward-thinking electronica fans, but his melody-driven downbeat pop is no less interesting for its lack of processing power -- in fact, Dial "M" for Monkey is more intriguing for its focus on discernible melodies as well as experimental samples. Green's second proper Bonobo album is a model of structure and economy; though he uses just a few elements for each song and rarely varies the rhythm, the results are always compelling listening. Breakbeats power most of these tracks, befitting its release on Ninja Tune, though much like labelmate Fog, Green's interests don't lie in hip-hop or even trip-hop; his influences encompass alternative rock ("Something for Windy" is reminiscent of the Cure) and world music (are those Indonesian gamelan bells driving "D Song" or something from a children's toy?). ~ John Bush

"Meditation Music of Ancient Egypt" (03/02/2004) Electronic Markoe, Gerald Jay, AstroSolo performer: Gerald Jay Markoe (harp, flute, synthesizer, bells). This unique and starkly beautiful album is designed to induce a calm, trance-like state and create a sonically defined space to let the mind wander. Gerald Jay Markoe is a classically trained musician whose previous recordings have consistently reached the top spots on New Age music charts. MEDITATION MUSIC OF ANCIENT EGYPT explores the esoterica of ancient Egypt through a series of captivating compositions based on timeless musical principles. Each track on the recording was conceived and composed using Egyptian scales and is performed on instruments that recall the ancient world. Harps, plucked strings, and wind instruments create an atmosphere that is perfect for healing bodywork. The first track, "Entering The Eternal Now," shimmers into being and quickly settles into the listener's head. Markoe has intentionally composed music he believes will sound pleasant to the ear, but that also dissolves quickly into soothing, melodic white noise. This technique allows the listener to block out all other distractions and focus while meditating, practicing yoga, or doing any quiet activity.

"The Mirror Conspiracy" (11/01/2003) Electronic Thievery Corporation, ESLThievery Corporation: Eric Hilton, Rob Garza. Additional personnel: Bebel Gilberto, See-I, Pam Bricker, Lou Lou, Brother Jack (vocals); Desmond Williams (guiatr, keyboards, bass); Chris Vrenios (guitar); Rob Myers (sitar); Rick Harris, Zack Grady, Mike Thomas (horns); Roberto Berimbau (percussion). Engineers: Desmond Williams, Rob Garza, Eric Hilton. Recorded at ESL Studios, Washington, D.C. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Bebel Gilberto (vocals); Desmond Williams (guitar, keyboards); Rob Myers (sitar); Mike Thomas, Rick Harris (horns); Eric Hilton, Rob Garza (programming). Recording information: ESL Studios, Washington D.C. Photographer: Bill Crandall. Thievery Corporation's second album strengthens the duo's reputation as masters of downtempo, internationally influenced beats. Borrowing from bossa nova, dub reggae, French torch songs, Italian movie soundtracks, and jazz, THE MIRROR CONSPIRACY is a sophisticated, pleasurable listen. The album is sequenced beautifully, with sexy, world-weary tracks such as "Samba Tranquille" floating into the downtempo torch stylings of "Shadows of Ourselves." The album's international flavor comes from places as diverse as Jamaica, ("Focus on Sight" featuring I-See on vocals), Paris' Arab quarter ("Le Monde"), and opium dens and teahouses ("Indra," "Lebanese Blonde"). Rob Hilton and Eric Garza, the men behind Thievery Corporation, also have active remix and DJ careers. They're co-owners of Washington D.C.'s 18th St. Lounge, a club where the Thievery Corporation sound gets tested and exercised at each evening's DJ sets. Their remix album ABDUCTIONS AND RECONSTRUCTIONS is another excellent example of their masterful production work.

Arrangers: Jeff Johnson; Jim Brickman; Paul McCandless; Philip Aaberg; Steve Erquiaga; Thea Suits-Silverman; Tracy Silverman; Tim Story; Brian Dunning. Like others in the series of "Windham Hill Collections" (see THANKSGIVING, RELAXATION, or AMERICA), PRAYER brings together artists associated with the label or with the New Age genre in general to perform musical selections based on a theme. Like the others discs in this series, the performances on PRAYER are of a high quality, and provide an appropriate soundtrack to quiet meditation or a restful drive through the countryside. The source material here is religious, and includes Bach's "Ave Maria" (performed by guitarist Steve Erquiaga), Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus"(performed by pianist Philip Aaberg), and Faure's "Sanctus from Requiem" (performed by Tim Story on piano and synthesizer). There are also traditional hymns ("Holy, Holy, Holy;" the Irish traditional "Be Thou My Vision"), and originals from flautist Thea Suits and violinist Tracy Silverman. Traditionally reverent, yet laced with contemporary flourishes, PRAYER is a fresh take on spiritual music that is appropriate for sacred and secular contexts.

Director: David Whitaker. Arrangers: David Whitaker; Peter Cobbin. Their trans-Atlantic notoriety may have come amidst compilations of French house and electronic scenes, but Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel are not just another pair of Gallic beat-miners. Like DJs and studio wizards, the duo known as Air does construct their records pastiche-style; but instead of unleashing dancefloor-friendly "tracks", they come up with mellow abstractions for retro-minded chill-out rooms, flaunting their analog instrumentation and love for make-out melodies every step of the way. MOON SAFARI, Air's full-length debut, is like a fuzzy, blissful daydream in which a glowing ambiance pervades over a crossroads of '60s French pop, '70s Philly soul and '80s Eurodisco. Rarely does the tempo reach mid, and when it does ("Kelly Watch The Stars" and "Le Voyage de Penelope"), it's on the strength of funky synth-pop grooves. Overall, their sounds are rarely less than kaleidoscopic, enveloping the listener in happy, high-IQ muzak. If it sounds somewhat disposable, it's because all good pop should. It is the fact that one can't leave Air's aural confections behind that makes MOON SAFARI great. This remix album, centered on tunes from the 10,000 MHZ LEGEND disc, turns the tables on the usual relationship between proper album and remix collection in that it may be more interesting than it's parent record. The bulk of Air's charm has always been the stylistic tweaking and sonic hijinks they perpetrate over the course of an album's production and arrangements; they've never claimed to be brilliant songwriters. Thus, with the emphasis off the construction of original material and more appropriately placed on the band and their various collaborators' ability to make electronic magic in the studio, EVERYBODY HERTZ is in some ways more of a triumph than its predecessor. The Mr. Oizo remix of "Don't Be Light" is distinguished by Kraftwerki

"Give Up" (02/18/2003) Electronic Postal Service (The), Sub Pop Records (USA)The Postal Service: Ben Gibbard (guitar, electric piano, keyboards, drums); Jimmy Tamborello (programming). Additional personnel: Jen Wood (vocals); Chris Walls (piano); Jenny Lewis (background vocals). Personnel: Christopher Walla (vocals, guitar, piano, drums); Jen Wood (vocals, background vocals); Jimmy Tamborello (accordion, keyboards, programming); Jenny Lewis (background vocals). Audio Mixer: The Postal Service. Recording information: Hall Of Justice/Dying Songs, Los Angeles/Computerworld, (2002). A side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who formerly played with synth-poppers Figurine but now records as Dntel, the Postal Service creates bedroom electronica with surprising emotional pull on GIVE UP. Ten tracks lyrically convey both a youthful ennui and the nostalgic ache of longing. Tamborello creates a tense sonic space that allows Gibbard's spare yet careful guitar to occasionally chime in and cut the tension. While Tamborello's sculpted electronics hearken back to the minimalism of early Depeche Mode, Gibbard's expressively fey vocals and emotional sentiments lend a warm, comforting contrast to the machine-age chilliness (as do the occasional backing vocals from Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis). This contrast is best illustrated on "We Will Become Silhouettes," when Gibbard sings "[A]nd we become silhouettes when our bodies finally go," only to be followed by a string of optimistic bleeps that are the sonic equivalent of a miniature sky full of twinkling stars.
