Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, emcee, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Phoenix (bass, background vocals); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, samples, background vocals). Additional personnel: Joel Derouin, Charlie Bisharat, Alyssa Park, Sara Parkins, Michelle Richards, Mark Robertson (violin); Evan Wilson, Bob Becker (viola); Larry Corbett, Dan Smith (cello); David Zasloff (Shakuhachi flute). Recorded at NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California. "Session" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Mike Shinoda (vocals, sampler); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Joel Derouin, Mark Robertson , Sara Parkins, Michele Richards, Charlie Bisharat (violin); Evan Wilson, Bob Becker (viola); David Zasloff (shakuhachi); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (sampler, background vocals). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Recording information: Mike's House; MRG Studios, North Hollywood, CA. In one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of recent years, Linkin Park maintains its position at the top of the nu-metal heap with METEORA. The band labored carefully over their craft; for instance, the writing process of leadoff single "Somewhere I Belong" spawned 30 finished choruses before vocalists Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington arrived at the version found on the album. The combination of Shinoda's raps and Bennington's sing/scream vocals makes for an altogether complementary approach, best evidenced in "Faint" and "Easier To Run." The pressure felt by Linkin Park to meet a high standard with their sophomore release even finds it's way into the lyrics of "Nobody's Listening," where self-doubt and fear are almost all-consuming. Producer Don Gilmore (Apex Theory, Blind Tribe) mans the boards with a decisive lean towards acoustic drums. That is not to say by any means that Linkin Park's inventive use of samples and turntables is any less present or crucial to the group's now-signature sound.

"Deliverance" (09/27/1994) Heavy Metal Corrosion of Conformity, Columbia (USA)Corrosion Of Conformity: Pepper Keenan (vocals, guitar); Woody Weatherman (guitar); Mike Dean (bass, background vocals); Reed Mullin (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Bruce Smith (pedal steel guitar). Engineers: Jeff Tomei, Mark Richardson, John Custer. Recorded in Atlanta, Georgia. Personnel: Pepper Keenan (vocals, guitar); Mike Dean (vocals); Woody Weatherman (guitar); Reed Mullin (drums, background vocals). Audio Mixers: John Custer; Richard Mouser; Toby Wright. Photographer: Terry Richardson. The state of the music scene circa 1995 reflects a younger generation's disenchantment with society's standards, and pontificating about such matters is one of alternative rock's most popular themes. This nihilism goes beyond the realms of third or fourth generation punk. Corrosion Of Conformity touches upon this pessimistic outlook on DELIVERANCE. Musically, C.O.C. is much darker and heavier than the more stripped down punk bands who look to the Buzzcocks, not Black Sabbath, for guidance. Pepper Keenan's vocals, coupled with guitarist Woody Weatherman's Iommi-an leads (particularly on "Albatross") bring to mind vintage Sabbath. Religious themes, dealing with the proliferation of evil and the disintegration of faith, are continually touched upon. "Broken Man" deals with a broken spirit, and "Heaven's Not Overflowing" is about a decayed society. Sin's use as a tool of power by organized religion is the crux of "Shake Like You," while the title track delivers a message of self-reliance rather than expecting salvation in the zero hour. A settling balm to these thunderous pronunciations is the inclusion of songs like "Without Wings," and "Shelter" whose gentle strumming and swooping pedal steel accompaniment is provided by guest musician Bruce Smith.

"Act III" (04/10/1990) Heavy Metal Death Angel, Geffen Records (USA)San Francisco's precocious Death Angel finally reached musical adulthood (though some band members were still barely old enough to vote) with 1990's Act III. Their first album to benefit from major-label distribution and a truly top-notch production courtesy of Max Norman, it also witnessed the continuing development of lead guitarist Rob Cavestany, who literally dominated the album with his impressive chops and superior songwriting. Coupled with his generally well-thought out lyrics (sung by the still mediocre Mark Osegueda), songs like "A Room With a View," "The Organization," and especially first single "Seemingly Endless Time" seemed to confirm the band's destiny as apparent heirs to intellectual thrashers Anthrax, then in swift decline. Sadly, a number of external (sparse promotional support, the genre's dwindling popularity) and internal forces (bandmate squabbling) would make this the band's final album. At least it served as a fond farewell and remains the ideal starting point to the Death Angel discography. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

"Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 [PA]" (10/05/2004) Heavy Metal Korn, Epic (USA)This release includes a bonus DVD. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); Brian Welch, James Shaffer (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silveria (drums). GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," and frenetically raw "Freak on a Leash." Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up!" and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Breaking Benjamin: Ben Burnley (vocals, guitar); Aaron Fink (guitar); Marcus James (bass guitar); Jeremy Hummel (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Billy Corgan (guitar); David Bendeth (keyboards). When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn. With strong melodies reminiscent of Staind or Incubus at their most accessible, the Pennsylvania combo makes good use of soaring vocal harmonies and unusual production touches (the piano intro on "Breakdown" and the swirling, phase-shifting guitars on "Believe") to separate itself from the heavy-rock pack. On "Forget It" and the closing ballad "Rain," Breaking Benjamin gets downright New Romantic, suggesting a diversity unusual among its contemporaries.

"Antichrist Superstar [PA]" (10/08/1996) Heavy Metal Marilyn Manson, Interscope Records (USA)Marilyn Manson: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, pan flute); Twiggy Ramirez (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Zim Zum (guitar); M.W. Gacy (keyboards); Ginger Fish (drums, programming). Additional personnel includes: Trent Reznor (guitar, Fender Rhodes, Mellotron, programming); Dave "Rave" Ogilvie (programming). Producers include: Trent Reznor, Dave Ogilvie, M. Manson. Engineers include: Dave "Rave" Ogilvie. The latest volley in industrial music's invasion of the mainstream, shock-rock band Marilyn Manson revels in the perverse, the unpleasant and the grotesque, championing hate, alienation and negativity with the same fervor with which happy-face troubadours of the '70s promoted sunshine, peace and happiness. The band's music owes a great deal to labelmates Nine Inch Nails, incorporating processed vocals, screeching electronics and enough bad attitude to bring even Norman Vincent Peale down. But rather than follow Trent Reznor down the path of sonic experimentation, Marilyn Manson establishes an unrelenting, grungy, guitar-driven attack that makes Ministry and The Butthole Surfers sound "unplugged." ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR is not an album for everyone. It is the aural equivalent of root canal without novocaine. Marilyn Manson creates a harsh, nightmarish soundscape to symbolize all that is evil and corrupt in contemporary society. There can be no such thing as a casual listen to ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR's 16 scabrous tracks, and no listener will come away unscathed.

"Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection" (05/17/2005) Rock & Pop Def Leppard, Island Records (USA)Def Leppard: Joe Elliot (vocals); Pete Willis, Phil Collen, Steve Clark , Vivian Campbell (guitar); Rick Savage (bass guitar); Rick Allen (drums). In the mid-1980s, there were few hard-rock bands as popular as Sheffield, England's Def Leppard. Influenced by the glam rock of Queen, Slade, and the Sweet, the quartet reveled in the style's high-energy elements, while trading the outlandish imagery for a no-frills, denim-clad look that made them even more accessible to the masses. With 1983's PYROMANIA and its delayed follow-up punch, 1987's HYSTERIA, Def Leppard became an international phenomenon, unleashing hit after hit, including the riff-heavy, shout-along singles "Rock of Ages," "Pour Some Sugar on Me," and "Armageddon It." This collection presents every song on the previously released VAULT: GREATEST HITS 1980-1995, along with an entire second disc of additional album tracks, including the AC/DC-like "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)" and HYSTERIA's anthemic ode to "Women." Throughout the decades, the group endured its share of upheavals and tragedies--drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a 1985 accident and guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991--but they continued recording into the 21st century (see the 2002 track "Now"), revealing a determination that most of their peers lacked. For fans of '80s hard rock, this 35-track compilation is essential.

"Sad Wings of Destiny" (01/25/2000) Heavy Metal Judas Priest, Koch Records (USA)Frontman Rob Halford has considered this to be Judas Priest's SGT. PEPPER, and it's easy to see why. The album expanded upon the group's debut by tackling a variety of styles, utilizing dynamics to striking effect, and establishing the essential guitar interplay between Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. "Victim Of Changes" may be forever known for its snarling riffs and Halford's startling final scream, but its subdued mid-section enhances the power of those elements. "The Ripper" offers up Victorian horror, while "Tyrant" and "Island Of Domination" thunder along with metallic machismo. The album has it softer side, however, notably the neo-classical rock instrumental "Prelude," the melancholy piano ballad "Epitaph," complete with crooning vocal harmonies, and the semi-acoustic existential contemplation "Dreamer Deceiver," a long-lost gem in the band's large oeuvre. Frankly, every track on this album is a winner, and SAD WINGS OF DESTINY would become the first of several albums from Priest that would forever transform the world of heavy metal.

"The End of All Things to Come" (11/19/2002) Heavy Metal Mudvayne, Epic (USA)Mudvayne: Chud (vocals); Guug (guitar); Ru-D (bass); Spug (drums). Recorded at Pachyderm Studio, Cannon Falls, Minnesota. THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME contains an audio CD and a bonus DVD. When Mudvayne's major-label debut appeared, many critics either lumped the band into the same rap-metal bag as Korn and Limp Bizkit, or merely dismissed the combo as a Slipknot rip-off. On THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME, the group transcends the comparisons and wacky makeup to deliver a ferocious slab of the hard stuff that, for once, truly deserves to be termed "alternative." Equal parts Morbid Angel, Rush, and Shudder To Think, the disc highlights Mudvayne's ability to temper nu-metal's characteristic machine-gun riffing and throat-shredding vocals with a variety of quirky textural shifts and (gasp!) melodic vocalizing. Lyrically, the group mines the same nihilist/anarchistic territory popularized by Metallica and scores of '80s hardcore punk groups. Luckily, however, Mudvayne avoids the I-wanna-blow-up-the-world-'cause-my-mom -told-me-to-take-out-the-trash syndrome and manages to come up with several interesting and genuinely chilling variations on the theme.

"Reinventing Hell: The Best of Pantera [PA]" (09/23/2003) Heavy Metal Pantera, Rhino Records (USA)Includes a bonus DVD. Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar); Rex Brown (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Producers: Terry Date, Vinnie Paul, Dimebag Darrell, Sterling Winfield, Pantera. Compilation producers: John Kirkpatrick, Karen Ahmed, Kim Davis. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye. With its pioneering "power groove" sound, Pantera leapt onto the metal scene of 1990 with the landmark album COWBOYS FROM HELL. The Texan band distinguished itself by offering up a potent mid-tempo version of the typically fast-paced thrash metal style, resulting in a dense, crushing sound that served as a solid foundation for Phil Anselmo's dynamic growl-to-a-falsetto-in-seconds-flat voice. Although this collection only features five tracks from the early-'90s one-two punch of COWBOYS FROM HELL and VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, it serves as a good introduction to the band's overall output. Pantera's career from the mid-'90s onward is represented by fierce tracks such as "I'm Broken," "Becoming," "5 Minutes Alone," and "I'll Cast a Shadow," as well as covers of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" and Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever."

Recording information: Zing Studios, Westfield, MA (12/15/2003-01/29/2004). Photographer: Mike D'Antonio. On Killswitch Engage's previous two albums, the group delivered the sort of passionate speed/thrash rarely heard since RIDE THE LIGHTNING-era Metallica and REIGN IN BLOOD-era Slayer. With THE END OF THE HEARTACHE, which features new singer Howard Jones, the band takes its signature sound to a new, absolutely ferocious level, combining slicing, neo-classical guitar riffs with vocals that alternate between gut-wrenching death-metal grunts and melodic crooning. In addition, drummer Justin Foley seems to have channeled both Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Pantera's Vinnie Paul, adding enough pummeling double-kick madness to put a smile on any old-school metal-head's face. Though the album's wide-screen production values keep it from ever sounding too retro, THE END OF HEARTACHE will appeal to anyone pining for the '80s glory days when serious metal was synonymous with long hair and Anthrax t-shirts.

"Rock Star" (08/28/2001) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Priority Records (USA)Original score composed by Trevor Rabin. Recorded at Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California and Record Plant Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Jeff Scott Soto (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); Jason Bonham (drums). The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen. ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover of Rainbow's "Long Live Rock And Roll" that retains the spirit of the original. Steel Dragon's original tunes such as "Livin' the Life" and "Stand Up" are straight out of 1987, with the screaming vocals and crunchy guitar riffs that made the era so much fun. Real-life metal anthems like Kiss's "Lick it Up" and Motley Crue's "Wild Side" are perfect choices for this soundtrack. Everclear's bratty yet determined title song is catchy, while "Colorful" is a new tune from Verve Pipe that holds up well with their earlier material. Anyone who grew up on the hard rock of the '80s will love this soundtrack.
