"The Winding Path" (06/03/2003) New Age Kern, Kevin, Real Music RecordsPersonnel: Kevin Kern (piano, keyboards); Jeff Linsky (acoustic guitar); Pamela Copus (harp, flute, alto flute); Jeremy Cohen (violin); Terry Miller (electric bass); Terence Yellop (bells); Pamela Gibbs (rain stick); Randy Copus (percussion); David Earl (programming). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California in January 2003. Personnel: Kevin Kern (piano, keyboards); Jeff Linsky (acoustic guitar); Pamela Copus (harp, flute); Jeremy Cohen (violin); Coyote Oldman (flute, alto flute); Randy Copus (percussion); David Earl (drum programming). Audio Mixer: Ron Davis. Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (01/2003). It's always refreshing when an artist finds a unique niche and knows the role his or her music plays in the listener's life. In the case of elegant, meditation-minded composer/pianist Kevin Kern, it's creating an atmosphere for pure healing and relaxation. Rather than work up grandiose themes or pop melodies like some of his better-known new age peers, he is all about warmth, intimacy, and chilling out. Skeptics may bristle at liner note essays like his "Winding Path Guided Visualization," but at least he's honest about his primary goal to soothe, and that he won't mind if we drift off into a gentle sleep before waking up to a deeper self awareness. He enhances his piano on lush numbers like "The Touch of Love" with guitar and flute, and "The Way of the Stream" features a beautiful acoustic introduction by guitarist Jeff Linsky. Opening with a gentle rainstorm and Native American flute ambiences, "High Above the Valley" leads Kern into more exotic territory than ever before. Longtime Kern fans might not find these melodies quite as memorable as those on previous discs, but their simple beauty is undeniable. ~ Jonathan Widran

"Amarantine" (11/22/2005) International Enya, RepriseLyricist: Roma Ryan. Personnel: Enya (vocals, various instruments). Audio Mixer: Nicky Ryan. Recording information: Aigle Studio. Photographer: Simon Fowler. Arranger: Nicky Ryan. After a five-year silence in the wake of her phenomenally successful release A DAY WITHOUT RAIN, Enya reemerged in 2005 with AMARANTINE. The singer knows better than to mess with a good thing, and all of the hallmarks of her sound are here: the evocative Celtic overtones, the symphonic arrangements and lush soundscapes, and the singer's pure, haunting vocals. Additionally, Enya's long-time creative sidekicks--producer arranger Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan--are on board here too, and the time-tested results show. AMARANTINE, a poetic name for a mythical, everlasting flower, is an appropriate metaphor for the music. Luxuriant, mysterious, and with a deep aesthetic sense, Enya's music seems to surge and unfurl like a blooming flower. Fans who feared Enya may have lost her touch since this album's multi-platinum predecessor can rest easy. Atmospheric, stirring, and masterfully executed, AMARANTINE is as fully realized and accomplished as anything the artist has released.

"December" (09/01/2003) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsSolo performer: George Winston (piano). Recorded in September & October 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Solo performer: George Winston (piano). Producers: William Ackerman, George Winston, Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom. Engineers: Stephen Miller, Karen Kirsch, Howard Johnston. Recorded in September & October 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The mother of all solo instrumental albums, and with good reason. Mixing traditional carols with Pachelbel's Canon and a few originals, Winston produces a solo piano album of unparalleled -- and undeniable -- beauty. How can music be simultaneously stirring and soothing, relaxed yet exalted? Millions have found the answer here, and an industry has spent more than a decade trying to duplicate it. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Light Fantastic" (09/21/1999) New Age Roach, Steve, FathomPersonnel: Steve Roach (percussion, programming, samples, sound effects); Stefin Gordon (tambora); Vidna Obmana, Vir Unis (samples). Recorded at The Timeroom, Tucson, Arizona. Personnel: Steve Roach (percussion, sound effects); Stefin Gordon (tamboura, tambourine); Vir Unis (sound effects). Recording information: Timeroo, Tucson, AZ. Arranger: Steve Roach. Assimilating the myriad courses that electronic music has taken throughout its existence, and bridging it together with the sensibilities of fellow alchemists Vidna Obmana and Vir Unis, Steve Roach continues to assault the sonic palette with an absolutely splendid album of mandala-esque rhythms and great currents of sound that simply churn and burn. On this assertive and bright collection, Roach leaves behind the techno-tribalisms of albums previous and discovered the white-hot light illuminating the universe's edge. During "The Reflecting Chamber" for example, soaring synthesizers mesh with elegant, curlicue drum patterns, the sounds of nebulae expanding their colorful tendrils across the cosmic spectrum. "The Luminous Return" finds Roach ringing out the celebration of light's triumph over darkness, amidst a thunderous rhythmic spectacle that helps to propel serpentine electronic waves out into the vastness. It's at once awe-inspiring and sobering to behold, easily among his best. Feel the power.

"Quiet Heart/Spirit Wind" (10/08/1996) New Age Warner, Richard, NaradaOriginally released as two seperate LPs. Personnel: Richard Warner (alto flute, bamboo flute, piano, finger cymbals, rainsticks, chimes). Liner Note Author: Richard Warner. Photographers: James Gerard; Edmond Lowe. Unknown Contributor Role: Richard Warner. Quiet Heart/Spirit Wind is a two-fer reissue of Richard Warner's first two solo CDs. It is a set of sedate and soothing music. Quiet Heart, from 1982, has seven beautifully serene compositions. (Narada has added two new pieces for the re-release.) Warner performs acoustic minimalism as well as anyone. Spirit Wind, from 1984, features Warner's acoustic flutes accompanied by crystal glasses that were tuned by adding water. He had six friends playing the crystal. He also adds chimes, a rainstick, a piano, and finger cymbals. The atmospheres are vast and smooth. There are no rough edges. This is a great set. It will appeal to fans of Riley Lee, Life in Balance, Jim Cole, Lisa Lynne, and Nancy Rumbel. ~ Jim Brenholts

"Deep Breakfast" (09/11/2001) New Age Lynch, Ray, Ray Lynch ProductionsRay Lynch's synthesizer playing sometimes approximates keyboard instruments and sometimes sounds like individually plucked strings on electrified string instruments, but always has a deeply textured melodic structure and a buoyant rhythmic underpinning. Isolated notes in series and patterns make a pointillistic mosaic of sound that alternately soothes and stimulates. No wonder this is one of the best-selling new-age albums of all time. ~ William Ruhlmann

"State of Grace, Vol. 2: Turning to Peace" (10/07/2003) New Age Various Artists, Windham Hill RecordsPersonnel: Paul Schwartz (piano, keyboards, programming); Lisbeth Scott (vocals); Carlos Santana (guitar); Helen Tunstall (harp); Julian Leaper, Perry Mason, Chris Tombling, Warren Zielinski, Mark Berrow, Katherine Shave, Dave Woodcock, Simon Fischer, Patrick Kiernan, Boguslaw Kostecki, Rita Manning, Cathy Thompson, Jackie Shave (violin); Bob Smissen, Rachel Bolt, Gustav Clarkson, Peter Lale (viola); Robin Firman, David Daniels , Anthony Pleeth (cello); K.C. Porter (keyboards); Mary Scully (double bass). Audio Mixer: Peter Cobbin. Liner Note Author: Paul Schwartz . Recording information: EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA; Sorcerer Studio, New York, NY; Sorceror Studio, New York, NY; Worldbeat Recording, Calabasas, CA. Paul Schwartz's STATE OF GRACE II continues where STATE OF GRACE left off. On this album, the imaginative producer draws from two Latin texts, the Magnificat and the Stabat Mater. The former expresses Mary's joy, while the latter focuses on her grief as Jesus is put to death. Mariology is usually associated with the medieval period, yet this music interprets Mary in a contemporary light. Each piece on STATE OF GRACE II has a liturgical feel to it, but is performed using contemporary sounds and harmonies. The opening track, " Magnificat," has the Crouch End Festival Chorus performing with keyboards and an electronic backbeat. "Curaci¢n (Sunlight on Water)" has a Latin American feel, given the rich percussion layers and Carlos Santana's emotive guitar leads. With "Stabat Mater" the music grows darker. Here, Lisbeth Scott's voice becomes the focus. Known for her contributions to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, Scott brings to life the story of Mary with great poignancy. Scott's duets with Schwartz on "Fear Not" and "Let Me" also showcase the singer's penetrating voice. Overall, STATE OF GRACE II is an ambitious release that celebrates Mary and all that she symbolizes.

"Atlantis: A Symphonic Journey" (09/07/2004) New Age Arkenstone, David, NaradaA musical tour of the mythological underwater continent, ATLANTIS bears all the hallmarks of New Age composer David Arkenstone's craft. A rich combination of instruments and orchestral colors, rolling percussive and melodic motifs, and a flair for rich cinematic sweep, ATLANTIS comes to life before the listener's ears. The album is so detailed, dramatic, and grand in scope, that it is not difficult to imagine it as the soundtrack to a major Hollywood blockbuster, with the music's accompanying images spilling across the big screen in dazzling array. From the atmospheric introduction of "The Dream of the Gods," with its strings and chimes, to the swelling grandeur of "Across the Great Oceans," Arkenstone draws on the swirling patterns of composers like Phillip Glass, and the mainstream ideas of film score writers like John Williams. Medieval and Renaissance flavors crop up here and there, such as the lilting flute melody on "The Gardens of the Citadel," giving the imaginary landscape an ancient, historical feel. Arkenstone's narrative comes to a head with the majestic feel of tracks like "The Painted Sails" and the tense, tribal percussion on "Fire and Water," completing a dramatic arc that resolves in the calming tones of the album's closer, "Below the Ocean."
