"De-Lovely [Digipak]" (06/15/2004) Pop Vocal Original Soundtrack, Columbia (USA)Audio Mixer: George Massenburg. Recording information: Air Lyndhurst, London, England; Avatar Studios, New York, NY. Arrangers: Stephen Endelman; Gilbert Goldstein; Sonny Kompanek. Director Irwin Winkler's 2004 film DE-LOVELY cleverly depicts Broadway songwriting icon Cole Porter looking back on his life as if it were a theatrical production. Given Kevin Kline's extensive background in musical theater, Winkler's decision to cast him as Porter proved to be inspired, and Kline is wonderful throughout the soundtrack. Mix in an eclectic array of musicians and what you have is a project that works as an effective bridge between generations. Where else will you find Sheryl Crow luxuriating in a bossa nova-arranged "Begin the Beguine," neo-soul songbird Vivian Green making like Ella Fitzgerald on "Love for Sale," or Porter himself having a grand old time warbling his own "You're the Top?" Other noteworthy performances include Englishmen Robbie Williams taking a slightly foppish romp through "It's De-Lovely," Elvis Costello giving a vaudevillian turn to "Let's Misbehave," and Natalie Cole pouring herself into a lush reading of "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye."

"The Phantom of the Opera [Original London Cast]" (11/23/2004) Pop Vocal Original Cast, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics by Charles Hart. Principal cast: Michael Crawford (The Phantom Of The Opera); Sarah Brightman (Christine Daae); Steve Barton (Raoul); John Savident (Monsieur Firmin); David Firth (Monsieur Andre); Rosemary Ashe (Carlotta Giudicelli); Mary Millar (Madame Giry); John Aron (Ubaldo Piangi); Paul Arden Griffith (Monsieur Reyer); Barry Clark (auctioneer); David De Van (Porter/Marksman/Fop); Janet Devenish (Meg Giry); David Jackson (Monsieur Lefervre); Janos Kurucz (Joseph Buquet); James Patterson (Don Attilio/Passarino); Peter Bishop (Slave Master); Justin Church (Flunky/Stagehand); Mostyn Evans (Policeman); Sue Flannery, Janet Howd (Page); Andrew Golder (Porter/Fireman); Peggy Ann Jones (Wardrobe Mistress/Confidante); Maria Kesselman (Princess); Patricia Richards (Madame Firmin); Jill Washington (Inkeeper's Wife). Recorded at EMI Studios & Audio International, London, England. Includes liner notes by Andrew Lloyd Webber. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber. It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. So when the time came to adapt his music for the film version of the monumentally successful theatrical work, Webber enlisted the aid of longtime collaborators Nigel Wright and Simon Lee. They produced an expanded orchestral version of the score, grander and more sumptuous than the original, and assembled a 100-member ensemble to do it justice. However, the tragic story of the disfigured Phantom and Christine, the beautiful object of his desire, cannot be told without powerful performances of those roles. Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum quickly dispel any concerns regarding the adequacy of their portrayals. Butler's full-blooded renditions of "The Music of the Night" and the title song are tinged with a dark eroticism, while Rossum's account of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" skillfully conveys her character's vulnerability and conflicted feelings. The soundtrack also features a newly penned song by Webber, the poignant "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver, who appears in the role of Carlotta in the film.

"All or Nothing at All" (10/24/1995) Pop Vocal Holiday, Billie, PolygramALL OR NOTHING AT ALL compiles three separate LPs originally released in the late 1950s: ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL (Verve 8329), BODY AND SOUL (Verve 8197) and SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS (Verve 8257). SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS is available separately on CD on Verve (815 055). Personnel: Billie Holiday (vocals); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Jimmy Rowles (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Joe Mondragon, Red Mitchell (bass); Alvin Stoller, Larry Bunker (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on August 14 & 18, 1956 and from January 3-9, 1957. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and new Donald Clarke. This is Volume 7 of the Verve Take 2 series. Personnel: Billie Holiday (vocals); Barney Kessel (guitar); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Jimmy Rowles (piano); Larry Bunker, Alvin Stoller (drums). Liner Note Author: Don Clark. Recording information: 08/1956-01/1957. Editor: Peter Pullman. Photographer: William Claxton. ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL is actually a compilation of three albums worth of material recorded in 1956 and 1957, near the end of Holiday's life. The satisfactions here are numerous. Producer Norman Granz presented one of jazz's definitive vocalists sitting in with a stellar combo of swing-style all stars. Granz assembled a wonderful band for Holiday. Hearing musicians like Ben Webster, Jimmy Rowles, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Barney Kessel constructing sixteen and thirty-two bar statements on some of the finest standards to ever come out of Tin Pan Alley is reason enough to listen. Holiday is featured by virtue of being the singer, and she includes the introductory verses on several of the tunes. But the band passes around the introductions and obbligatos with the ease and generosity of old familiar colleagues, and everyone makes enthusiastic use of the room they're given, occasionally taking up to a chorus apiece before taking it back to the top. Holiday is one of those artists whose work tends to get divided into "early" and "late" periods. These recordings offer an expansive view of her late work in perhaps the most sympathetic, inspiring and swinging context possible.

Long-running Broadway musicals owe much of their continuing success to the replacements who people their casts as the original stars move on, but these performers generally go unacknowledged -- not eligible for awards, passed up for cast recordings. Fiddler on the Roof, which went on to become the longest running musical in history up until then, after opening on September 22, 1964, enjoyed several excellent actor-singers in the starring role of the turn-of-the-century Russian-Jewish dairyman Tevye, starting, of course, with Zero Mostel. In November 1965, the part was taken over by Herschel Bernardi, a 42-year-old veteran who had considerable experience with stage works that, like Fiddler on the Roof, were based on the writings of Sholom Aleichem. Bernardi's portrayal was so strong that it earned him a Columbia Records contract and this recording, on which he sings songs from the show. But that's not all. Joseph Stein, the show's librettist, has written a narration that simultaneously gives the songs context and liberates them from the storyline of the musical. Bernardi has a rich, resonant baritone that allows him to inhabit the songs fully, but he stops short of actually playing Tevye. With new, pop-oriented orchestrations by Peter Matz, this is a vocal album, not a cast recording, but it offers an illuminating gloss on the show. Bernardi even sings two songs from the score not heard on Broadway. The amusing, if irreverent "When Messiah Comes" was cut for time during tryouts, and "Fiddler on the Roof," based, like "Tradition," on the familiar "Fiddler's Theme," was written as a promotional pop song and even became a minor hit for the Village Stompers. This album was also a minor hit, entering the charts in the fall of 1966 and reaching the Top 100 in some rankings. It deserves to be better known. ~ William Ruhlmann Fiddler on the Roof first opened in 1964 in New York. The story of a Jewish milkman who lives in Russia with his family (including three daughters), the original Broadway cast starred Zero Mostel as the milkman. Anti-Semitic notions abound as Tevye and his family find themselves being forced from their village. Tevye's daughters break from their village's "tradition" as they marry for love, not for prosperity. Throughout all of this, a symbolic fiddler lingers over them. Fiddler on the Roof was a notable success, with the original Broadway cast running for over 3,000 performances. It was also the origin of several famous and now-standard songs, such as "Sunrise, Sunset," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Tradition," and "If I Were a Rich Man." The music is beautiful, and haunting at moments. This highlights recording has all of the major hits. ~ Sarah Erlewine Originally released as a double-LP set and now on one CD, the gold-selling soundtrack album for the screen adaptation of the long-running Br

"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle Of Life" were also both nominated for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or Television; and the album's instrumental tracks were nominated for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. The heady influence of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne--and all the other musicians who've introduced pop fans to the sounds and style of Africa--resonate subtly throughout the Hollywood flourishes of THE LION KING. Part of THE LION KING's appeal can be traced to Hans Zimmer's imagistic evocative instrumental score. Instrumental excerpts such as "This Land" and "Under The Stars" are a vibrant amalgam of lush orchestral passages with flashes of idiomatic African vocal colors and ceremonial percussive textures (while "King Of Pride Rock" echoes elements of Mozart's REQUIEM and traditional African six-beat rhythms). But it's THE LION KING's comic operetta songs and the Elton John/Tim Rice pop miniatures that ultimately distinguish this soundtrack and give it fresh legs for all holiday seasons. John's philosophical ruminations on "The Circle Of Life" are framed by power pop on a grand scale, with huge reverberant drum accents and massive sampled choruses and strings. But "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" is this collection's most engaging song, a sort of Afro-Rockabilly groove, tinted by the gospelish drive of John's Little Richard style piano. Principal Cast: Tsidii Le Loka (Rafiki); Samuel E. A British veteran of the easy listening circuit better known in many circles for his daft stage name (the original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer of light opera) and the imposing moustache he sported in his lover-man days on the hit parade, Humperdinck in fact has an impressive baritone. A certain brassiness is endemic to singers from the same stylistic time and place as Humperdinck (Shirley Bassey comes immediately to mind), but instead of Robert Goulet's bombast, Humperdinck has a light, almost jazzy quality to his vocal style that often recalls Dean Martin. "Where Is Love?" (08/01/1996) Pop Vocal Francis, Karen, SteepleChasePersonnel: Karen Francis (vocals); George Colligan (piano); James King (bass); Aaron Walker (drums). A promising young singer, Karen Francis made her recording debut on this set in 1996. She is particularly rewarding on ballads such as the opening two numbers ("I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and "The End Of A Love Affair") and "May I Come In" where her voice is quite expressive and she does justice to the lyrics. Francis is not as strong on the more medium-tempo material (her voice is sometimes a little erratic) although she does a fine job on the closing "On A Clear Day" and contributed the haunting "He Never Mentioned Love." This set is worth checking out; one hopes that there will be much more from Karen Francis. ~ Scott Yanow

"Anything Goes (First Recording of the Original 1934 Version)" (05/08/1990) Pop Vocal Original Soundtrack, EMI Angel (USA)Music and lyrics written by Cole Porter. This 1988 recording of the original 1934 score of ANYTHING GOES includes all the original songs as they were first performed at New York's Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934. Original orchestrations conducted by John McGlinn. Principal cast includes: Kim Criswell (reno Sweeney); Chris Groenendaal (Billy Crocker); Frederica Von Stade (Hope Harcourt); Jack Gilford (Moonface Martin). Recorded at CTS Studios, Wembley, England in 1988. Includes liner notes by Miles Kreuger, Roger Kimball and John McGlinn. According to theater historian Miles Kreuger, one of three annotators of this 1988 studio cast recording of Cole Porter's Anything Goes, the show "has proved to be the most frequently revived musical of the 1930s and is performed almost daily by professional and amateur groups alike." Even so, it was relatively unperformed in major venues and rarely recorded until 1987, when a revised version opened on Broadway and became a hit. That production boasted both a new libretto and an altered score that interpolated songs from other Porter works. The whole point of this recording is to do the opposite, to present Anything Goes as it would have been heard in its original production, with the songs originally written for it in the original orchestrations where possible, restored where necessary. John McGlinn, another annotator, who also served as the recording's conductor, explains that many of the orchestrations were lost and that he labored with one of the orchestrators, Hans Spialek, then in his late 80s, to re-create them. This is the recording's chief selling point: it is a work of aural scholarship and, with a 144-page booklet, its notes presented in English, German, and French, and also a work of considerable research. All of that is impressive. But no attention at all is given in that lengthy booklet to the recording itself, which employs a cast of opera and operetta singers who, for the most part, lack the liveliness necessary to put across a frothy musical like this. Frederica Von Stade, as the ing?nue Hope Harcourt, is especially stilted, while Cris Groenendaal, as the male romantic lead Billy Crocker, has none of the friskiness and charm the part calls for. Thank God, then, for Kim Criswell, who digs into the starring role of evangelist-turned-nightclub singer Reno Sweeney as if she were channeling its creator, Ethel Merman, but also with her own spunkiness, and saves the proceedings during the many songs in which she appears. And a second thanks must go for comic actor Jack Gilford as Moonface Martin (Public Enemy Number 13), who also adds some humor to what is supposed to be a musical comedy. Still, on the whole, this is a recording more valuable in theory than in practice, with a booklet that's more enjoyable than the disc it accompanies. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Love Songs" (02/11/2003) Pop Vocal Cole, Nat "King", Capitol/EMI RecordsArrangers: Gordon Jenkins; Les Baxter; Nelson Riddle; Ralph Carmichael. Released just in time for Valentine's Day 2003, the Capitol compilation Love Songs is a generous collection of romantic ballads sung by Nat King Cole. The compilers have leaned heavily on the Gordon Jenkins-arranged and -conducted albums Love Is the Thing (1957) ("When I Fall in Love," "Stay as Sweet as You Are," "It's All in the Game," "Stardust") and The Very Thought of You (1958) ("The Very Thought of You," "The More I See You," "For All We Know"), though there are tracks dating back to the early '50s and up to Cole's final sessions in 1964. Jenkins' lush string charts dominate, however, and they add force to Cole's rich, becalmed interpretations. His trick is to understate the sophisticated love lyrics, leaving the drama to the arrangements. This material has been presented in countless configurations by Capitol over the decades, and in a sense this is just another one. But the collection holds together well, and with a running time of 74 minutes it allows enough time for plenty of smooching on love's favorite holiday. ~ William Ruhlmann
