"Tha Carter II [PA]" (12/06/2005) R&B Lil Wayne, Universal DistributionA one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap.

"500 Degreez [PA]" (07/23/2002) R&B Lil Wayne, Cash Money RecordsProducers include: Mannie Fresh, Jazzie Pha, Cash Money Millionaires, Big Tymers, Mack 10. Recorded at Sony Studios, New York, New York, Patchwerk Recording Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Personnel: Lil' Wayne, Big Tymers, TQ, Baby, Petey Pablo, Blaque, Mannie Fresh, Tateeze, Cristale (rap vocals). Recorded at Patchwerk, Atlanta, Georgia and Sony Studios, New York, New York. Audio Mixer: Leslie Brathwaite. Recording information: PatchWerk Recording Studios, Atlanta, GA; sony Studios, NY. Lil Wayne comes on as hard as can be on 500 DEGREEZ, throwing gangsta imagery around like Rip Taylor with a fresh supply of confetti. Still, no matter how strenuously he underscores his gangsta themes on such representative tracks as "Gangsta S***," "F*** You," and "Way of Life," his hard-hitting approach is offset by a subtle-yet-undeniable sense of humor. For one thing, there's Wayne's voice itself, which at its most vituperative has echoes of Eminem's Jerry Lewis-isms. Then there's the production, which is laced throughout with goofy ensemble vocals and synth riffs that bespeak a deep devotion to the street-cred quirk of George Clinton. Such guests as Baby, Big Tymers, and TQ are on hand to bolster Wayne's hard-as-nails image, but he still can't hide the sly grin behind his thug-life frown.

"Old School Soul Party [Box]" (03/01/2005) R&B Various Artists, Shout! FactoryLiner Note Author: Steven Chean. Another entry in Shout! Factory's ongoing series of triple-CD box compilations promoted on PBS, this one is more cohesively presented. Sequenced to flow like a typical party, the discs of this predominantly '70s-era 58-track R&B collection are divided into three connected parts. Starting with the high-energy sounds of Wild Cherry's one-hit wonder "Play That Funky Music," disc one (subtitled "Kickin' It Off") continues with tough funk hits from Cameo, Rick James, Parliament, and James Brown. Mercifully dodging the disco bullet save for Donna Summer's "Last Dance," this nonstop funkathon platter is alone worth the price of admission. Adding different sounds such as the Undisputed Truth's slightly trippy "Smiling Faces Sometimes" and the Beginning of the End's tropical "Funky Nassau" successfully serves to shift the style but not the mood. Disc two ("Getting' into the Groove") lightens the groove moderately as melody and pop become more emphasized on Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real," the Friends of Distinction's "Love or Let Me Be Lonely," Gene Chandler's "Groovy Situation," and Ashford & Simpson's "Solid." These are all well-chosen selections that were substantial hits, but not as ubiquitous as the Isley Brothers' "That Lady, Pts. 1-2," a tune that always seems to find its way onto '70s soul collections such as this. Disc three ("Dimmin' the Lights") moves into slow and sensual post-party fare with 19 quiet storm smooth jams from artists such as the Five Stairsteps ("O-o-h Child"), Minnie Riperton ("Lovin' You"),the Chi-Lites ("Have You Seen Her"), and Marvin Gaye ("Sexual Healing"). The schlock factor is obviously higher here, but all the songs are Top Ten R&B and/or pop hits and will spark instant recognition from those this box is intended for. The remastered sound is crisp and sparkling throughout, bringing out these oldies' subtleties -- especially with percussion -- that you might not have heard before. While not definitive, the set accomplishes its mission of replaying the soundtrack to a colorful late-'70s urban shindig. More than a haphazard collection of oldies, this conceptual box boasts a well-defined focus, a unique programming flow, and of course lots of soul. ~ Hal Horowitz

"The Ultimate Collection [Sony/Epic] [Box]" (11/16/2004) R&B Jackson, Michael, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Siedah Garrett, Diana Ross (vocals); The Notorious B.I.G., Vincent Price (rap vocals); Chris Tucker (spoken vocals); Larry Carlton, Michael Sembello, Tito Jackson, David E. Williams , Marlo Henderson (guitar); Jim Horn (saxophone); David "Hawk" Wolinski (electric piano); Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); John Robinson , Nathan Watts, Bobby Watson (bass instrument); Ollie Brown, Bill Bottrell (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Randy Jackson , Richard Heath (percussion); Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson (background vocals); Seawind Horns. By 2004, Michael Jackson's bizarre image almost completely obscured the talent that had made him an international superstar. However, he became a musical icon by simply being the best at creating and performing pop songs. The opening moments alone of hits like "Rock with You" and "Billie Jean" would make them classic, but every aspect of these songs adds up to perfect radio pop. Jackson's THRILLER, after all, didn't simply luck into being the biggest-selling record of its time; each of its seven Top 10 hits had unique charms and drew from different elements of the pop universe. While there have been many previous Jackson hits collections, the four-CD/one-DVD ULTIMATE COLLECTION is just that--it represents Jackson's whole career, from his youthful days with the Jackson 5 to the early years of the 21st century. (The rare omissions--"Human Nature," "Heal the World"--show up live on the DVD.) Mixed in with his numerous hits are previously unreleased songs, demo versions of hits, album tracks, and odds and ends, most remarkably, one of the earliest versions of "We Are the World" with almost completely different lyrics. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION expertly chronicles the career of one of the most important, if unusual, pop artists of all time.

"Love Songs: Greatest Duets" (01/14/2003) R&B Gaye, Marvin, MotownPersonnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Betty Wright, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells, Oma Page, Kim Weston, Diana Ross (vocals). Producers include: Harvey Fuqua, Johnny Bristol, Nikolas Ashford, Johnny Bristol, Smokey Robinson. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Audio Mixers: Suha Gur; Ellen Fitton. Arrangers: Angelo Morris; Betty Wright. Marvin Gaye's Love Songs: Greatest Duets gathers most of his best-known duets, organizing them by singing partner. After getting off to a poor, but well-meaning start with a 1994 version of "Distant Lover" that pairs Gaye's original vocals with re-recorded vocals by Betty Wright and tinny-sounding production, the album does a 180 by offering up some of the best work Gaye did with his ultimate duet partner, Tammi Terrell. Along with definitive songs like "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By," the collection also includes lesser-known gems such as the lovely "If This World Were Mine." Gaye's duet with Kim Weston, "It Takes Two," is another of the album's essential tracks, while most of the rest of Love Songs consists of pleasant but relatively obscure duets such as "Once Upon a Time" and "What's the Matter With You Baby" with Mary Wells and "So Good to Be Loved by You" with Oma Page. "Pledging My Love," Gaye's duet with Diana Ross, rounds out this enjoyable collection. While this album doesn't have quite the impact of the Love Songs collection of his solo work or Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads, it's still effortlessly soulful and romantic. ~ Heather Phares

"Inspiration Information" (02/01/2006) R&B Otis, Shuggie, Luaka BopPersonnel includes: Shuggie Otis (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, bass, drums, bell, programming); Richard Aplanalp (oboe, tenor saxophone); George Duke (celeste, electric piano, organ); Wilton Felder, Mike Kowalski, Aynsley Dunbar (drums); Johnny Otis (percussion, background vocals); Jim "Supe" Bradshaw (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Winston Cenac and James Sullivan. This is part of LuakaBop's World Psychedelic Classics series. Ignored upon its release in 1974 and celebrated upon its reissue in 2001, Shuggie Otis' fourth and last album Inspiration Information exists out of time -- a record that was of its time, but didn't belong of it; a record that was idiosyncratic but not necessarily visionary. It was psychedelic soul that was released far too late to be part of any zeitgeist and it was buried at the time. Yet no matter what Luaka Bop's grand poobah David Byrne claims on the sticker -- he says Shuggie's "trippy R&B jams are equal to Marvin's and Curtis', but somehow more contemporary sounding...closer to D'Angelo meets DJ Shadow" -- this isn't revolutionary. It can occasionally sound modern, such as on the rolling head trip "XL-30," but only because it's the kind of groove Shadow would sample and build on; the slow, liquid instrumental head trips sound the same way. Perhaps that's why it can seem more contemporary -- contemporary ears are more attuned to these relaxed, warmly trippy soundscapes. Otis crafted all of this essentially alone, playing each instrument himself, and it's quite clearly a reflection of his inner psyche, and no matter how much it floats and skates upon its own sound, it's a welcoming, inviting sound. But, no matter how much the partisans claim -- and their effusive praise is plastered all over the liner notes, with Sean O'Hagan claiming that it shocks you out of a rut, Stereolab's Tim Gane says it is "almost like a new style of music that could've developed but never did" -- this isn't revolutionary, even if it's delightfully idiosyncratic. So, don't fall for the hyperbole. This isn't an album that knocks your head off -- it's subtle, intricate music that's equal parts head music and elegant funk, a record that slowly works its way under your skin. Part of the reason it sounds so intriguing in 2001 is that there just aren't that many musicians that doggedly pursue their individual vision while retaining a sense of focus. But it isn't a record without precedent, nor is it startling. It's a record for people that have heard a lot of music, maybe too much, and are looking for a new musical romance. [Luaka Bop's reissue contains four fine bonus tracks, including the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23," which the Brothers Johnson later had a hit with. The reissue also replaces the original cover -- which is nowhere to be seen in the liner notes -- with a "hip," self-consciously retro cover. Also, it has put in the "World Psychedelic Classics" with Os Mutantes, which is slightly misleading and a little unsettling -- with that subheading, there's just a little too much self-conscious, scholarly distance at play.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Trap House (Chopped & Screwed) [PA]" (07/12/2005) R&B Mane, Gucci, Big Cat Records (USA)Personnel: Gucci Mane; Khujo Goodie, Killer Mike, Lil Scrappy, Young Jeezy, Jody Breeze, Young Snead, Torica, Mac Bre-Z, Bun B. Recording information: PatchWerk Studios. For Atlanta MC Gucci Mane, the road to the release of his debut, TRAP HOUSE, was, to say the least, a bit bizarre. First there was a dispute over the underground hit "Icy," a collaboration with Young Jeezy of Boyz N Da Hood, with Gucci denying Def Jam the rights to put the track on the latter's debut record, which led to an exchange of accusatory mixtape tracks. Then, the week before TRAP HOUSE dropped, Gucci Mane found himself surrendering to murder charges. Controversy has rarely hurt record sales, but the album ultimately stands or falls on the strength of Mane's rap skills. To that effect, he is a charismatic rapper who rhymes with an agreeable rawness about rising from life on the streets. There is no smoke-and-mirrors obfuscation to his style; "Lawnmower Man" simply speaks of his prowess, "Black Tees" plainly, playfully swipes at the Dem Franchize Boyz hit "White Tees." The controversial "Icy" employs an electronic beat as spare as Mane's style for an effective paean to the streets. Across all the tracks, Gucci Mane's breezy demeanor contrasts his hard lyrics for a capable debut.
