"The Adventures of Marco Polo [Original Television Cast]" (05/06/2003) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, DRG (USA)Music composed by Clay Warwick and Mel Pahl. Lyrics written by Edward Eager. Principal cast: Alred Drake, Doretta Morrow, Ray Drakeley, Paul Ukena. Recorded on March 30, 1956. Originally released on Colombia Masterworks (ML 5111). Recording information: 03/30/1956. Director: Max Liebman. Unknown Contributor Roles: Doretta Morrow; Paul Ukena, Jr.; Alfred Drake. In the spring of 1956, Alfred Drake, the veteran Broadway star known for his starring roles in Oklahoma! and Kiss Me, Kate, and Doretta Morrow, who had also appeared in shows and films, were just finishing a run on Broadway and in London in Kismet that had continued since the musical opened in December 1953. That show, a tale of the East in which the music was adapted from Borodin, must have seemed perfect preparation for their participation in the television musical The Adventures of Marco Polo, another tale of the East in which Clay Warnick and Mel Pahl's music was based on themes borrowed from Rimsky-Korsakov. And so they were. Planned as a one-hour live TV show, the musical adapted well to a Columbia Masterworks LP. The small cast -- consisting of the two principals (Drake, of course, was Polo; Morrow was several different women), two supporting actors, and a chorus -- recorded a cast album on March 30, two weeks before the April 14 broadcast on NBC. As part of the production, Drake as Polo provided spoken bridging material that makes his peripatetic, episodic story comprehensible even to the listener without access to the TV program. Edward Eager's lyrics are adequate, if not quite as clever as he may have supposed them to be, and he is assisted mightily by Drake, turning in a typically commanding performance, and by Morrow, who handles the many ballads well. Polo gets into and out of one scrape after another with humor and bravado, and the show follows his story well. The cast album disappeared for decades before being brought into the digital age by DRG on CD in 2003; the restoration should inspire new productions. Theater fans should rejoice at having a lost album featuring Drake and Morrow back in print. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Indiavision: Hindi Films Songs And Instrumentals (1966-1984)" (06/14/2005) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Buda RecordsWesterners may not know it, but the Indian film industry (collectively known as Bollywood) has been producing more films than Hollywood for decades. With such a tremendous output, any Bollywood compilation is going to be somewhat arbitrary, although there are some names that no reasonable compilation can ignore: Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and composers S.D. Burman and his son R.D. Burman. Fortunately, all are represented on Indiavision: Hindi Film Songs and Instrumentals 1966-1984, a compilation that gives a decent overview of the kind of cultural and musical collisions that inform so much of the music of Bollywood. Alongside classical Indian instruments like sitar are surf guitars, sweeping string sections, blaring horns, synths, and sound effects -- oftentimes within the same tune. But these cultural collisions aren't just a part of the music, they are strong elements of the films themselves (which often borrow heavily from their Hollywood counterparts) and even a part of Indian culture itself with the many different ethnic groups that make up the populace. The informative liner notes not only give background on the composers and singers, they place the whole Bollywood phenomena into a larger context, explaining how vital the industry is to the nation, not just as escapist enjoyment but as a unifier of the different ethnic groups. It's this larger context that is often lost on Westerners, who might enjoy the music for its novelty value but fail to grasp what this entire industry means to the nation. That being said, there's a lot to enjoy here on a purely musical level, and tracks like "Lekar Ham Diwana" and the soundtrack to The Thief are certified classics. There are a lot of Bollywood comps out there, and this is as good a place to start as any. ~ Sean Westergaard

"Baker Street [Original Broadway Cast Album] [Remaster]" (05/16/2000) Soundtracks Original Cast, PolygramMusic composed by Richard Rodgers. Lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II. Principal cast includes: Alfred Drake (Curly); Celeste Holm (Ado Annie Carnes); Joan Roberts (Laurey); Howard Da Silva (Jud Fry); Lee Dixon (Will Parker). Reissue producers: Andy McKaie, Ron O'Brien, Max O. Preeo. Recorded in 1943 and 1944. Originally released on the Decca label. Includes liner notes by Max O. Preeo. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Kate Friedlich, Bambi Linn (vocals, dancer); Howard Da Silva, Lee Dixon, John Baum, Ellen Love, Ralph Riggs, Suzanne Lloyd, Elsie Arnold, Betty Garde, Joseph Buloff, Hayes Gordon, Edwin Clay, Paul Shiers, Faye Smith, Robert Penn, Vivienne Simon, Barry Kelley, Lee Dixion, Harvey Brown , Herbert Rissman, Dorothea MacFarland, Carl Nelson, Virginia Oswald, Joan Roberts, Alfred Drake, Marc Platt, Celeste Holm (vocals); Kenneth Buffet, Ray Harrison, Bobby Barrentine, Billie Zay, Diana Adams, Margit Dekova (dancer). Liner Note Authors: Louis Untermeyer; Max O. Preeo. Recording information: 10/20/1943-05/24/1944. Photographer: Brad Bennett. Rodgers & Hammerstein's adaptation of Lynn Riggs' play GREE GROW THE LILACS marked the birth of the modern musical. Music, lyrics, and choreography came together as never before to tell a uniquely American story, and enthralled audiences flocked to the show, breaking Broadway box-office records. In keeping with the production's pioneering spirit, it was also the first instance in which the entire cast was brought to the studio to record the show's musical numbers, thus originating the original cast recording. The concept proved highly successful--it wasn't long after the initial release of six-discs of 78s that another release featuring several songs not included in original set was brought to market. Eventually, the recording was transferred to LP, but without the additional songs; not until the 50th anniversary CD reissue were all the tracks available in one place. While most of the cast, with the possible exception of Celeste Holme, may no longer be well known, the songs are immortal. "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "Surrey With the Fringe on Top," and, of course, "Oklahoma" are classics of American song. If there is any question as to what has made this show a classic, the answer is right here.

"Jesus Christ Superstar [A Decca Broadway Original Cast]" (06/28/2005) Soundtracks Original Cast, Decca BroadwayMusic composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics written by Tim Rice. Principal Cast: Ben Vereen (Judas Iscariot); Jeff Fenholt (Jesus Christ); Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdelene); Bob Bingham (Caiaphas, High Priest); Phil Jethro (Annas); Barry Dennen (Pointus Pilate); Paul Ainsley (King Herold); Alan Braunstein (Priest #1); Michael Meadows (Priest #2); Steven Bell (Priest #3); Michael Jason (Peter); Samuel Wright (Simon Zealotes). Recorded in New York, New York on October 20, 1971. Originally released on Decca (DL7-1503). Includes liner notes by Peter Filichia. Audio Remixer: Elvin Campbell. Liner Note Author: Peter Filichia. Recording information: New York, NY (10/20/1971). Photographer: Jay Thompson. Writers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice set several precedents with this album. First, it is a pre-stage studio version, and it topped the US charts upon release. Second, it is the first show to successfully put rock music in a theatrical context (Hair is really a pop/show-music pastiche, not rock). Third, it is a "sung-through" musical without spoken dialog, technically an operetta. Fourth, though musicals had turned more serious at this point, writing a show about Jesus Christ from the point of view of Judas was about as daring as you could get. It succeeds in all ways. In addition to the title song (a #14 hit sung by Murray Head), it includes "I Don't Know How to Love Him" by Yvonne Elliman. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Mamma Mia! [Original Cast Recording]" (10/17/2000) Soundtracks Original Cast, Decca (USA)MAMMA MIA is a musical based on the songs of ABBA. Music and lyrics composed and written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Principal cast: Lisa Stokke (Sophie Sheridan); Eliza Lumley (Ali); Melissa Gibson (Lisa); Siobhan McCarthy (Donna Sheridan); Louise Plowright (Tanya); Jenny Galloway (Rosie); Andrew Langtree (Sky); Neal Wright (Pepper); Nigel Harman (Eddie); Paul Clarkson (Harry Bright); Nicolas Colicos (Bill Austin); Hilton McRae (Sam Carmichael); Tom Magdich (Father Alexandrios). MAMMA MIA! was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Composer/Lyricists: Benny Andersson; Bj?rn Ulvaeus. Based on the Broadway musical, which, in turn, is based on vintage ABBA tunes, the 2008 Hollywood adaptation of MAMMA MIA! features the star-studded cast performing classic tracks by the beloved Swedish pop group. While most cast members (including Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan), acquit themselves admirably, Meryl Streep truly shines on buoyant songs such as the title track and "Dancing Queen." ABBA principals Benny Andersson and Bj?rn Ulvaeus turned to stage musicals after their band's demise and composed two, one of which, CHESS, ran in the West End and on Broadway. For their third stage effort, they returned to their ABBA catalog and put together MAMMA MIA!, a show that employs their old songs (with occasional lyric revisions) in the service of a libretto by Catherine Johnson about a girl who tries to discover her father's identity in time to have him give her away at her wedding. So, how does MAMMA MIA! compare to an ABBA greatest-hits album? Well, the recordings are less fully produced than the originals, and in that sense less impressive. But the originals were sung by Scandinavians who sometimes sounded like they had learned the lyrics phonetically, the vocals often featuring odd phrasing and word emphasis. Here, the songs are being sung by native English speakers, and that is a distinct improvement. Culled from the smash hit London, Toronto, and Broadway musical of the same name, MAMMA MIA is a treasure trove of ABBA hits penned by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who are also the guiding force behind said production. The theatrical versions of these classics have been reworked somewhat, and the album also includes some pieces not from the original ABBA catalog, but in the main this is a fun workout from the oeuvre of Sweden's biggest export since Volvo cars. While it's a little disorienting to hear familiar songs like these in unfamiliar orchestral settings, the material is strong enough to withstand the reworking it undergoes here. The result is an enjoyable memento of what should prove to be a long-running and popular production.

"Victor/Victoria [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]" (06/18/2002) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Turner Classic Movies MusicOriginal score composed and conducted by Henry Mancini. Lyrics written by Leslie Bricusse. Principal cast includes: Julie Andrews, Robert Preston, Leslie Ann Warren. Recorded at The Music Centre Wembley, Middlesex, England in 1981. Includes liner notes by George Feltenstein. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although the soundtrack to Victor/Victoria came out before this 2002 configuration (once even in an expanded edition), this was the most complete version yet, including as it does 13 previously unreleased tracks. That might be less exciting than it sounds, as all but one of those are instrumental selections by the MGM Studio Orchestra rather than pieces with vocals by the musical's two stars, Julie Andrews and Robert Preston (though there is a previously unavailable rehearsal of "The Shady Dame From Seville" with Preston on vocals). Still, in its favor this package also boasts mastering from the original 24-track tapes; the complete version of "You and Me" (with both Preston and Andrews on vocals) that was heard on the original soundtrack album, though it wasn't sung to completion in the film; and learned liner notes on the film's production. As for the Henry Mancini-Leslie Bricusse-penned music, it's a throwback to the kinds of sounds that ruled the stage and screen a half-century prior to Victor/Victoria's release, albeit with better fidelity than you'd hear on a 1930s or 1940s film soundtrack, and with a somewhat saucier plot line than would have usually been allowed in some productions. Some might find the constant orchestral interludes on this expanded edition dilute the flow of Preston and Andrews' slyly humorous performances, but that's what you have your remote CD sequencer for. ~ Richie Unterberger

"Battlestar Galactica: Season One [Sci Fi Channel Series]" (06/21/2005) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, La-La Land RecordsComposer: Bear McCreary. Personnel: Ken Stacey, Brendan McCreary, Michael Now, Lillis O Laoire (vocals). Audio Mixers: Steve Kaplan; Gordon Fordyce. What with the scores John Williams has penned for the Star Wars movies and those of Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and others for the Star Trek films, you'd think it was settled that the music of science fiction involves grand themes and lush orchestral arrangements reminiscent of European classical music. But Bear McCreary, who has taken on the task of scoring the second television series to be called Battlestar Galactica (a sort of "next generation" sequel to the 1978 series), has a very different view. To McCreary, space music can sound like almost any earth-bound style, although he is particularly fond of drums. Martial drums, Burundi-style drums, tympani, marching band drums, you name it, McCreary likes it, and he devotes many of the 30 cues on Battlestar Galactica: Season One (78 minutes culled from over five hours of music heard on the first season of the show) to percussion showcases. But that's not all by a long shot. Determined to demonstrate his mastery of musical styles, McCreary writes faux opera ("Battlestar Operatica"), muzak ("Battlestar Muzaktica"), string quartets ("The Dinner Party"), Celtic music ("Wander My Friends"), and more, bringing in vocalists here and there to sing in Latin, Gaelic, and Italian. Now and then, he also gives us echoey, electronic interludes that actually suggest the science fiction setting of the series. But all of these are just side trips in the main percussion fest that to McCreary is what battlestars should sound like banging around in the great beyond. In space, it seems, everyone can hear you drum. ~ William Ruhlmann

Arrangers: Craig Eastman; Jennifer Hammond. Carter Burwell's score for The Alamo incorporates, aptly enough, elements of music from the Old West into his intricately melodic and percussive style. Cues such as "What We're Defending" have a typically rousing, patriotic mix of strings and horns, but even then Burwell finds a way to give these moments some of his character by ending the track with a contemplative harp. Mexican musical motifs also come through on tracks like the charming "El Bexareno," which moves from playful flutes and mariachi horns into bittersweet strings. Still other tracks, like "300 Miles of Snow," have a folky, Western cast to them. The score also juxtaposes radically different pieces, such as the ominous "Who Took Their Loved Ones" and the lighthearted "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing." "Deguello de Crockett" is an especially striking track, pairing lonesome fiddles with martial drums and brass. But the main attraction of the score, is, of course, the music that accompanies the battle of the Alamo itself. The six-part suite begins with the eight-minute "The Battle of the Alamo, Pt. 1," commencing with tremulous strings before building into a more ominous brass and string melody, followed by a rousing flourish of brass and percussion that is abruptly cut off by more bleak-sounding strings. The rest of the suite follows suit, becoming gradually more and more mournful until it end

The heavy-rock supergroup Audioslave proves to be the elder band here, offering up its mid-tempo ode to individuality, "Be Yourself," while the program's unofficial troubadour, Gavin DeGraw, sagely and effectively covers John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Other standout songs include Hot Hot Heat's restless, angular "Middle of Nowhere" and Michelle Featherstone's spare, melancholy "Coffee & Cigarettes," rounding out an eclectic set that improves on the original album.
